Most CVS Pharmacists Can Now Prescribe Antiviral Pill to Treat COVID

On Nov. 8, 2022, the following information was sent to employers that offer self-funded major medical, certain preventive-only or limited medical health benefit plans administered by Star Marketing and Administration, Inc. Employers were encouraged to email the following information to covered employees who are eligible for this program.

Most CVS pharmacists can now prescribe Paxlovid, a COVID-19 antiviral medication, and fill the prescription for higher-risk individuals who are eligible for treatment. Contact your local CVS pharmacy within three days of symptoms to see if you or your covered dependents are eligible for Paxlovid at no additional cost to you.

This pilot program, which began on Nov. 1, 2022, does not apply to the Minute Clinic and is not available to covered employees who live in Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

In July, the FDA revised its emergency use authorization for Paxlovid, expanding the role of state-licensed pharmacists to assess eligibility and prescribe the oral antiviral medication to higher-risk COVID-19 patients, when appropriate.
